Alraune

With live musical accompaniment from Alison Blunt with Hannah Marshal and Javier Carmona

Star of Metropolis Bridgitte Helm stars as an alien wonder seeking revenge against her creator. With original music from improvisation-based violinist and vocalist, Alison Blunt, with Hannah Marshall and Javier Carmona.

Alraune was directed by Henrik Galeen in 1928. This forgotten gem mixes folk legend with a whiff of science fiction particularly suited to Brigitte Helm's alien beauty.  Alraune is created in the lab of Professor ten Brinken.  When she discovers the truth about her genesis, she reacts with a very human anger and subjects her immoral scientist ‘father’ to her subhuman manipulative powers. A bitter revenge in a not-to-be-missed cinematic pleasure.

Bridgitte Helm  Statuesque Helm first enthralled audiences in her dual role in Fritz Lang's Metropolis. She also ‘vamped’ magnificently in other silent films and into the sound era.

Alison Blunt  Self-confessed musical chameleon. Recent improvisings: music/ storytelling at European Storytelling Marathons (BC guest artist); solo voice/ violin/ movement piece in Apocryphal Festival; concert with Ensemble Progresivo at Horta Cordel (Madrid) and underground performance at What is Music? Festival (Melbourne).

Hannah Marshall  After studying cello at GSMD Hannah moved on to explore improvisation on the John Stevens’ “Community in Music” course. Collaborating on many visual and performing arts projects, she also regularly plays with Kay Grant, Veryan Weston and Steve Beresford.

Javier Carmona  Javier has developed a musical career working in a wide range of styles, ranging from rock to free improvisation. In addition to playing in numerous and diverse ensembles, he has much ongoing experience collaborating on interdisciplinary projects.
