ReAnimate
ReAnimate was an innovative animation development initiative from Birds Eye View and Warp Films with the support of Skillset and the Bradford Animation Festival.
The Re:Animate programme offered selected writers and animators the opportunity to form new creative alliances and hot-house commercial animated feature film projects in a relaxed and stimulating environment.
Launched at a screening of Lotte Reineger's groundbreaking animation The Adventures of Prince Achmed, accompanied by live music from Warp artist Mira Calix as part of the BEV Film Festival 2010, Re:Animate offered participants specialist workshops, experienced industry mentors to develop their projects, a residential retreat, industry networking and an exclusive opportunity to pitch projects for the Warp development slate.
The successful projects which are now in development with Warp Films are Night at the Flicks by Kirtsy Peart, Gaelle Dennis and Jess Townsend; and Leonora by Marianela Maldonaldo and Pia Borg. Additionally, as a result of her Re:Animate project Marta di Francesco was invited to pitch for development with the BBC Pilot Animation Scheme.
The Lab
Re:Animate Phase I brought ten animators and ten screenwriters together for workshops and a ‘speed dating’ process as they looked for their dream collaborators. Partnerships formed, and a total of 20 projects were pitched to a BEV / Warp / Bradford Animation Festival panel. Six projects were selected.
Re:Animate Phase II saw ten writers and animators, with their six selected projects, participating in a residential workshop at the Bradford Animation Festival in November 2010, plus expert mentoring as the projects were developed before a final pitching session, from which three projects were taken onto the Warp Films slate and a further project resulted in a BBC development commission.
Participants
Phase II participants were Marta di Francesco, Marianela Maldonoldo, Pia Borg, Gaelle Denis, Emma Lazenby, Kirsty Peart, Jess Kedward, Anna Benner, Dictynna Hood and Gemma Burditt.
Phase I participants also included Maybelle Peters, Sally PearcePia Borg, Elena Pomares, Carolina Melis, Carol Noble-Dowlina, Jessica Townsend, Sarah Kennedy, Lisa Gornick, Mahalia Rimmer and Bridget Hurst.
