Halle Berry and Benicio del Toro star in Bier's first non-European work; another heart-aching drama with an anguished family at its core. • Brothers

    ICA Cinema 2, March 7, 6.30pm

    Dir. Susanne Bier, Denmark/UK/Sweden/Norway 2004, 117 min

When family man Michael is presumed dead after a UN helicopter crash in Afghanistan, his drifter brother Jannik offers help and support to Michael's wife Sarah and daughters. Devastated by grief, Sarah soon turns to Jannik for a different solace, and then the UN calls.

Bier's Cannes and Sundance Award-winning masterpiece penetrates the complex fidelities and needs of a family unit in distress. This screening follows the release of Hollywood's re-make of Brothers, starring Natalie Portman, with which Bier's star has become fixed in the crossover firmaments of both US and European film cultures.
