A breakout hit from the Sundance Film Festival, Lisa Cholodenko's The Kids Are All Right is a delightful, wry, intelligent comedy-drama about two children, conceived by artificial insemination and raised by a lesbian couple, who seek out their birth father.
Nic (Annette Bening) and Jules (Julianne Moore) are the parents of two teenagers conceived with the help of an anonymous sperm donor. The family live in a comfortable LA suburb, and theirs is a pretty normal existence - loving, but not perfect. When their children collude to contact their biological father, Paul (Mark Ruffalo) enters the family's life. An unattached organic farmer and restaurateur, Paul is all alt values and easy charm, and quickly causes ripples in the domestic set-up. Told with a sharp sense of humour, close attention to detail and several superb performances, the film is a moving, witty portrait of the postmodern family.
"Sparkling...Cholodenko and her cast carry it off with sensitivity, wit and warmth"
