BEV's Sound & Silents return in full force in 2013 with two new specially commissioned live scores. To tie in with BEV's 2013 festival Celebrating Arab Women Filmmakers, this year's Sound & Silents playfully bridge East and West as two British-Arab rising stars breathe new musical life into two Arabian Nights-inspired German classics.

Continuing our trailblazing ‘Sound & Silents’ programme of specially commissioned live silent film scores by cutting-edge female musicians, Bushra El-Turk and Amira Kheir bring The Adventures of Prince Achmed and One Arabian Night to The BFI Southbank, Southbank Centre, Barbican Centre and Watershed, Bristol.

  • The Adventures of Prince Achmed
+ live score by Bushra El Turk

Thu 7 Mar, 8pm, Southbank Centre
Fri 5 Apr, 7pm, Barbican Cinemas

The world premiere of a live score by rising star contemporary composer Bushra El-Turk, accompanying Lotte Reiniger’s ground-breaking film ‘The Adventures of Prince Achmed’, the world’s first feature-length animation.
Performed by a chamber ensemble combining classical Western and traditional Middle Eastern instruments, this is a unique celebration of multicultural musical styles.

  • One Arabian Night
+ live score by Amira Kheir

Thu 4 Apr, 6.10pm, BFI Southbank
Sun 14 Apr, 6pm, Watershed Bristol

Fusing contemporary jazz and East African music, Amira Kheir creates a spellbinding new multi-instrumental live score for this brilliant fantasy-drama.
This ‘brilliant’ (NY Times) fantasy-drama of forbidden love was a pioneering collaboration by renowned director Ernst Lubitsch and early Hollywood superstar Pola Negri, inspired by ‘Arabian Nights’ stories.
