May 8.40 - 10.40PM
BEV's
closing night film and winner of their Best Newcomer award, Sonja
Heiss' first feature is a funny and brilliant docu-style portrayal
of 5 Westerners travelling across the well-trodden paths of Asia.
Co-starring Brit comedy actor Chris O'Dowd (The IT Crowd) as the
chaotic Liam.
"Sonja Heiss shows
real promise for lightly comic, observational filmmaking."

May 6.30 - 7.50PM
A compelling
journey through the last 30 years of Afghanistan's history, as lived
by three Afghan women. Shot over three years in Pakistan and Afghanistan,
a doctor, teacher and social activist tell how their lives were
violently affected by wars of international making, religious fundamentalism
and three different regimes in Afghanistan. The women lead us through
Afghanistan's complex history, telling how global power plays have
dramatically impacted their lives in devastating ways.
"A
remarkable treasure trove" - Variety |

Glasgow
Film Theatre

May 8.30 - 10.20PM
We were
thrilled to host the UK premiere of celebrated Japanese photographer
Mika Ninagawa's first feature film in March. With a wonderfully
odd-ball score of Jazz, Electro and Japanese Pop and lavish costume
to boot, Sakuran excels as a whole-hearted and stylistically original
tale of one Geisha girl snarling, biting and kicking her way to
the top. |

May 6.30 - 7.30PM
Exploring
the relationship between employer and servant, this is a delicate
and brave documentary that asks how two women negotiate the ingrained
social and cultural attitudes that govern their lives. Based in
Mumbai, Indian filmmaker Jain turns the camera on her maid Lakshmi
and finds that the delicate boundaries of their tentative friendship
are put to the test through Lakshmi's unexpected pregnancy and illness.
And after
receiving huge praise at BEV2008 opening night gala we knew that
Glasgow could not miss THE FIGHTING CHOLITAS, an uplifting, award-winning
documentary celebrating the lives and careers of some very unlikely
wrestlers - the indigenous women of El Alto, Bolivia. |
