Closing Night Talents: GIRLCORE

As we finish the final preparations for tonight’s Festival Awards and Closing Night Party (starting at 8pm at the ICA), I managed to get some quick questions over to GIRLCORE, to give you an idea of what you’re in for tonight….

Firstly, what is GIRLCORE?

GIRLCORE in essence is an all female collective that wants to promote female talent in the creative industries. But the most important thing is that we want to have ridiculous amounts of fun whilst doing it, which is probably why our parties have become quite infamous!

I’m sure you probably get asked this all the time, but why the name “GIRLCORE” – is it exclusive to women?

The core of GIRLCORE is exclusive to women and this extends in many ways. For example, we have a residency in Shoreditch at Catch 22 (last Thursday of every month) and the line up is always female talent. But we are not man haters at all! Boys can come to all of our events – we will welcome them with glitter then probably throw a dress at them!

What is so great about being in a collective?

It seems we have created a family for ourselves. GIRLCORE is a place where we come to laugh, cry and bounce off each other to get more out of life creatively. Sometimes it’s hard to get your voice heard, but when you have 12 other girls screaming with you it becomes actually quite hard to ignore.

I’m super happy that you are at another Birds Eye View party, I went to the BEV/Whitechapel party last year and the creative mayhem you brought along really brought the whole thing together – it felt like everyone got to know each other very quickly and had lots of fun, no doubt feeling inspired and relaxed by the silly, chaotic atmosphere. What plans are you conjuring up for this year?

More chaos and sillyness really! We have hired some costumes to die for from the South London Theatre Company (who desperately need donations to save their beautiful theatre) and look forward to encouraging the crowd to get involved in their own femme fatale photo shoots and role playing. We have make up artists, photographers, and stylists. Basically we are gonna turn the crowd into the screen sirens we know they are.

And finally, what would be your dream Girlcore event?….

Every thing we do is a dream event to be honest. The very nature of GIRLCORE hosting anything means that we are surrounded by the girls that we love. As long as we don’t take ourselves too seriously, all that we do will be fun. The minute it isn’t, we stop!
