ReAnimate Lab kicks off

Published on July 7, 2010 | Written By Amy Mole

During our 2010 festival, Birds Eye View launched the latest in our series of training labs for women filmmakers. This time, our focus was animation. Through our 2010 programming research we discovered that although the first ever feature animation, The Adventures of Prince Achmed was made by a women, Lottie Reineger…very few women followed in her footsteps. In fact only a handful of feature animations have been made by women since this form came into play. And so, we decided to tackle this head on.

Our new training lab, ReAnimate, in partnership with Warp Films with the support of Skillset Film Skills Fund,  focuses on bringing together animators and screenwriters for creative collaboration.  After a process of mentoring and workshops, a number of individual projects and creative teams will be selected for development support with the intention that the projects will go into production with Warp from late 2011.

After a grueling selection process we have found our first 20 participants (10 animators and 10 screenwriters) who met at the familiarisation workshop on Monday 5th July. This workshop began with a session to familiarise animators with screenwriting conventions and to familiarise screenwriters with the process of developing and producing animation. After an illuminating talk from our friends at Slinky pictures (Animation producer Maria Manton and writer/director Chris Shepherd) about how their creative relationships support the development of long form work, the participants were taken through an intensive process of speed dating, before heading to the pub to continue conversations. In Stage 2 of ReAnimate we will find out which creative partnerships have been formed…and get a sense of the animation ideas before the partners head into the dragons den to secure a place on phase 3. Our ReAnimators include:
