Screen International’s ‘Class of 2010′

Published on July 12, 2010 | Written By Louise Forbes

Screen International logoThis year has been a fantastic year for women directors, but just when you think the recognition is rising, Screen International lets the side down.

Each year they bring out an exciting list of up-and-coming filmmakers – the ones to watch, and so far they have had an impressive success rate - so naturally this presents a great and sure-fire opportunity for those talented women to get noticed. But as the industry’s leading trade magazine you would expect diversity from its ‘Stars of Tommorow’ list, however, not one female director appears on the list of future filmmakers to watch. And who did they get to talk to these lucky male directors - you’ve guess it – three established male directors, and so the male teaching the male continues.

Nevertheless, all is not lost, they did manage to feature three female writers – Claire Wilson, Paven Virk and Kelly Marcel. So some might say we’re halfway there and with a little bit of help from BEV, next years Class of 2011 will be up to scratch.
