BEV celebrates & supports international women filmmakers. The flagship BEV Film Festival runs at London's BFI Southbank and ICA, with exclusive previews, shorts, retrospectives, training and cutting-edge live performances.
As part of our Sound and Silents Season coming up in a couple of weeks classical Brit Award winning cellist Natalie Clein, Mercury Award nominated jazz pianist Zoe Rahman and the only British string quartet of its generation dedicated exclusively to contemporary and experimental music, The Elysian Quartet will perform their specially commissioned live accompaniments to four silent films featuring icons such as Greta Garbo and Gloria Swanson.
From sultry femme fatale filled drama to slapstick romanic comedy, the films The Temptress, I Don’t Want to Be A Man!and My Best Girlare brought to life by these accomplished musicians. We caught up with experimental vocal trio Juice ahead of their live musical accompaniment to The Danger Girl as part of the double bill withI Don’t Want to be a Man! accompanied by Zoe RahmanBirds Eye View Sound & Silents Season this May. They talk to us about what inspires them, writing music for film, the gender gap in the music industry when it comes to composers, what their dream score would be and what they are up to at the moment.
The Birds Eye View Sound and Silents Retrospective this year features three delightful blonde and boisterous stars. Kelly Robinson, BEV retrospective programmer, gives her insights into these actresses and the flaxen-haired characters they play. Fresh from winning a Composer of The Year Award 2009, Mira Calix is known for her innovative scores, often accompanied by unique visual displays. As part of a special commission for the BEV Film Festival this year she will be presenting an original score for the first ever feature-length animation. Birds Eye View is excited to be at the Latitude Festival this weekend, yet again working alongside Bishi & Neil Kaczor as they present their new live soundtrack, specially commissioned to accompany Salome by the Birds Eye View Film Festival. Bishi is a singer, multi instrumentalist and DJ based in London whose new album Nights at the Circus was nominated for the Times Award and for a South Bank Show Award. Marcie MacLellan was able to speak to her in the midst of gearing up for the release of her second album.
This little rehearsal video just came through from The Monroe Transfer who are performing live to Pandora’s Box on Wed 11 March 6pm at the BFI Southbank.
This is just a very small glimpse of the amazing musical talent that will be accompanying the classic silent film starring iconic Louise Brooks.
