Celia Imrie leads the cast of Saint Joan

One of the many highlights of this year’s Festival programme was She Writes: a celebratory performed reading of one of Grace Banks and Kate Bingham’s screenplay Saint Joan, co-presented with The Script Factory and BAFTA, and written and developed during last year’s She Writes lab. The performance was introduced by a keynote speech from Birds Eye View Chair and celebrated producer (including, most recently, of Made in Dagenham) Elizabeth Karlsen, examining the current prognosis of British female screenwriters, and asking whether the challenges they face today might not be even greater than those in the earliest days of the industry. Chocolate and Filmmaking: a Divine combination

Make a Divine Film

Chocolate & filmmaking – they go together like The King’s Speech and BAFTA awards. And so Birds Eye View is delighted to be joining forces with Divine Chocolate for Make a Divine Film – a chance to make a short film about the history of Divine Chocolate and tell the story of how it travels from the cocoa farms of Ghana to the goody bags at the Birds Eye View Festival.

Here at BEV we’re all about championing women who take the creative lead in filmmaking. Since we launched the festival in 2005 we’ve shown hundreds of fantastic features, documentaries and short films all created by women, not to mention music videos, art installations, video games and the odd commissioned live music performance – all of which showcase and celebrate the amazing talent of creative women working in the UK. ReAnimate Lab kicks off

During our 2010 festival, Birds Eye View launched the latest in our series of training labs for women filmmakers. This time, our focus was animation. Through our 2010 programming research we discovered that although the first ever feature animation, The Adventures of Prince Achmed was made by a women, Lottie Reineger…very few women followed in her footsteps. In fact only a handful of feature animations have been made by women since this form came into play. And so, we decided to tackle this head on. Read the full story
