FILMONOMICS: FILMMAKERS

Sept 2017-March 2018

Birds Eye View

Birds’ Eye View’s highly regarded filmmaker programme Filmonomics returned in 2017/18, with a balanced portfolio of inward and outward focus. From sessions on developing confidence in your presentation style, with trained psychologists, to interrogating rejection with professional coaches specialising in female entrepreneur training, alongside case studies, current box office and data analysis, and future trend-forecasting – plus extensive networking sessions and screening events.  The programme runs over 12 sessions in London and is a blend of evening workshops plus two full day events.

Supported by Creative Skillset’s Film Skills Fund, with BFI’s Film Forever National Lottery funds, Filmonomics was created in association with former Screen International editor-in-chief Colin Brown, author of the Filmonomics blog for Slated.com. The bespoke programme is targeted at established women and BAME film practitioners, and is designed to bridge the gap between development and distribution – mixing industry knowledge with behind the scenes networking and discussions on vital topics such as finance, teams, marketing, exhibition and audience development. Another of the key aspects of the programme is the focus on the individual with sessions focusing on speaking with confidence, and how to deal with challenging characters.

Filmonomics is aimed at more established creative talent. Individuals should have at least a feature film or TV credit or a significant body of short form work and features in development/production. At least one participant in a team proposal must have a feature film or TV credit, which has been theatrically released or broadcast or is intended to be, if in post-production. We welcome applicants with two or more feature credits who fit the criteria below.

how it works

Filmonomics is targeted at feature film directors, writers and producers. Applicants can apply as individuals or as teams of two. The programme will prioritise female and non-white talent (either individuals or teams), where at least one participant is representative of one of these groups.

The total cost for the programme is £325 per participant. This cost has been greatly subsidised by our funders and this fee essentially covers catering and refreshments in the sessions.

BEV and Creative Skillset have bursary funds available to cover travel and accommodation costs for applicants based outside of London, and childcare/carer costs for parent/guardian carers. The bursaries will be disseminated according to the shared needs of the successful applicants. Each application will be considered on a case-by-case basis. You must provide an estimated cost for daily travel, accommodation and childcare. There are also several full programme bursaries available for female/BAME participants.
